They stood watching each other from a distance, neither knowing how to bridge the distance between them. Each action would take them closer to the final step, they both hesitated, neither wanting to be the first one.

She closed her eyes and silently prayed she would have the strength to hold back her tears. The winter breeze fluttered through her hair, he held back from going over and tucking them behind her ears. It was going to be harder than he’d thought. Just the sight of her made his resolve weaker but he knew he couldn’t risk that anymore. It was decided and had to be done.

She shivered against the cold wind, and pulled her white fur overcoat closer to her body. Today, I have to be strong, she thought. Gathering herself together, she took took a deep breath and moved forward. Their eyes met as he looked up at her, and she quickly looked away, not wanting him to see the pain she was trying so hard to hide.

As she walked towards him, he took a step forward. He held out his arms as she reached him, embracing her close to himself. She felt at home in his arms, his body seemed natural next to hers. She could smell his intoxicating perfume, the smell that signified “him”. She tried her best to stay composed, but her emotions finally overtook her. The tears started to stream down her cheek, soaking his sweater where she rested her head. It wasn’t going to be easy. She’d known that all along, but she’d thought she would be stronger than this. The memories started to flood her mind, all the happy moments, the smiles and laughter, the love between them, and everything they’d shared.

He held her face in his hands and looked down at her, wiping away the tears that stained her cheeks. It’s going to be okay, he said to her. He didn’t sound convinced himself, she could see the anguish in his eyes, the hurt he was trying to hide. She nodded in acceptance. This was it. It was finally over. It was time to say goodbye.

As he let her go, she felt her entire world move away with him. What was she going to do? How would she survive another day? But, she smiled at him. She had to be strong. For both of them. He kissed her on the forehead, their last kiss, their last touch. He walked back towards his car, his steps slow and heavy. As he got into the car, he looked back at her. She kept watching, trying to memorize his face, his deep brown eyes,  his perfect smile, the small stubble on his chin.

The car engine sputtered to life, interrupting her thoughts. As he drove away from her, she felt something inside her die. Tears flooded her eyes, she felt weak in the knees. As his car faded into the distance, she whispered to herself, it’s too late to say goodbye.
